Keep it Private: Password Protecting Directories in cPanel

You don't always want the whole world to see everything. Maybe you have a /proofs/ folder for clients, or a /dev/ folder for testing.

Server-Side Security

Directory Privacy adds "Basic Authentication". Before the website even loads, the browser pops up a system login box. This is extremely secure because WordPress/PHP doesn't even execute until the user authenticates.

How to Setup

  1. Go to Directory Privacy.
  2. Browse to the folder you want to lock.
  3. Check "Password protect this directory".
  4. Create a User (e.g., "client") and Password.
  5. Save. Now try visiting that URL!
